Huckabee, former Governor of the neighboring state of Arkansas, continues to impress in the South in the early returns thus far. Despite McCain’s enormous delegate lead, the fact that McCain is the presumptive nominee despite having lost more than 60 percent of the contests is truly remarkable. The division in the GOP base cannot be understated despite efforts by elected officials to endorse McCain in recent days (today former GOP presidential candidate and Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore endorsed McCain).

McCain has closed the gap to approximately 600 votes. Since no candidate will receive a majority of the vote on the GOP side the 20 delegates that would have been awarded will remain ‘uncommitted.’ Still, a popular vote victory for Huckabee would give the press lots of material by which to discuss (and criticize) McCain’s place in the Republican Party during the next few days.

11:35 p.m. Fox News has called the state of Louisiana for Mike Huckabee, his second win of the day, and 8th victory of the campaign.
