Keeping Up With the Joneses
Alabama Democrat Doug Jones will be the ninth ‘Jones’ sworn into the U.S. Senate and the first to serve in the chamber in 85+ years. The last Jones in the U.S. Senate was Washington Republican Wesley Jones who served from 1909 until his death in 1932. The remaining Joneses are Georgia Jeffersonian Republican George Jones (1807), Iowa Democrat George Jones (1848-1859), Tennessee Whig James Jones (1851-1855; 1855-1857), Nevada Republican/Silverite John Jones (1873-1895; 1895-1901; 1901-1903), Florida Democrat Charles Jones (1875-1887), Arkansas Democrat James Jones (1885-1903), and New Mexico Democrat Andrieus Jones (1917-1927). Jones would be the first ‘Doug’ in the chamber except the Alabama Democrat’s birth name is actually ‘Gordon.’
