Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin will likely remain prized battleground states in the 2008 Presidential election, as they were previously in 2004 and 2000. And while there is still at least a trace of purple in each, these three Upper Midwestern states seem to share a singular view of our current President, according to new survey data released this week by SurveyUSA.

President George W. Bush’s job approval rating in each state is nearly identical according to the poll, which was conducted February 9-11. In Iowa, only 34 percent of the 600 adults surveyed approve of Bush’s performance, while 63 percent disapprove. In Wisconsin, 34 percent approve and 64 percent disapprove. In Minnesota, 35 percent approve and 63 percent disapprove.

These low numbers aren’t as surprising as their similarities across the region, in light of some differences within each state as to the number who identify themselves as Republicans (32 percent in Iowa, 30 percent in Minnesota, and just 25 percent in Wisconsin).
