3:00 p.m.The caucuses will end in North Dakota at 9:00 p.m. CST. The Democrats will allocate 13 of its 21 delegates based on the proportion of support each candidate receives in the precinct caucus.

Republicans will allocate 23 of its 26 convention delegates today based on proportional voting; however, if a candidate receives more than two-thirds of the statewide vote, he receives all of the state’s national convention delegates.

8:36 p.m. Democratic (26% reporting)
Obama = 54%
Clinton = 43%

As projected here at Smart Politics, Obama is performing very strongly so far in caucus states, like North Dakota, Minnesota, and Kansas.

9:03 p.m. NBC News has called the North Dakota contest for Barack Obama. This continues Obama’s dominance in the caucuses, as projected by Smart Politics earlier in the week.

9:30 p.m. Fox News names Mitt Romney the winner of the North Dakota caucuses.

12:12 p.m. The final numbers from North Dakota:
Democratic (100% reporting)
Obama = 61%
Clinton = 37%
Edwards = 2%

Republican (100% reporting)
Romney = 36%
McCain = 23%
Pau = 21%
Huckabee = 20%

This marks a rare 3rd place finish for Ron Paul this evening. Paul performed strongest in the caucuses – breaking 15 percent mark here as well as in Minnesota and Montana.

    The law is the law, I don’t understand why the Secretary of State is involved. Aren’t the caucuses run by the political parties to select their candidates? Thus aren’t official, state-sanctioned elections? You’d think the parties could, essentially, let anyone they want vote to select candidates with the only limitation being government laws regarding qualified voters.
