With Jim Hagedorn announcing this spring that he would run against Tim Walz in the 1st CD again in 2016 and Stewart Mills filing paperwork with the FEC this week in preparation to take on Rick Nolan in the 8th CD, Minnesota could see at least two U.S. House rematch elections this cycle. Such rematches are becoming routine now in the Gopher State where at least one rematch among major party nominees has been held across 11 of the last 13 cycles dating back to 1990 (all but 2006 and 2010) totaling 22 rematches during this 24-year span. As to whether there could be three or more rematches next year remains to be seen: so far no major party challengers have filed to run against Republican Erik Paulsen in the 3rd CD, DFLer Betty McCollum in the 4th, Republican Tom Emmer in the 6th, and DFLer Collin Peterson in the 7th. Overall, challengers seeking rematches have been victorious in 15 of 104 attempts, or 14.4 percent of the time.
