Ohio’s U.S. House delegation has been a model in consistency: in 2016 all incumbents were reelected in back-to-back cycles for the first time in state history. That streak may be in jeopardy in 2018 with at least three of the state’s U.S. Representatives considering higher elected office. The delegation’s second most tenured member, Republican Pat Tiberi of the 12th CD, eyes a challenge against Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. Meanwhile, Democrat Tim Ryan of the 13th CD – who rose to national prominence after his challenge to oust Nancy Pelosi as minority leader for the 115th Congress – is rumored to be a contender for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Republican Jim Renacci of the 16th CD is also strongly considering a statewide bid for either a governor or the U.S. Senate. Since Ohio was carved into multiple congressional districts in 1812 there have only been four cycles in which every sitting member of the state’s U.S. House delegation has been reelected to the next Congress: in 1814, 2004, 2014, and now 2016.
