Split Ticket Voting Revisited
I co-authored a report on Split Ticket Voting released today at the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance. The popular lore is that Americans and Minnesotans are sharply divided into Republican “red” and Democratic “blue.” Although the divisions are clear, there are also a significant number of voters who cross party lines and vote for a Democrat and a Republican. The report paints the historical picture of split ticket voting for Minnesotans. It also discusses a recent Humphrey Institute poll that found nearly 3 times as many likely Amy Klobuchar voters are crossing over to vote for Republican Tim Pawlenty for Governor (13%) compared to Mike Hatch voters crossing over to vote for Mark Kennedy (5%).
